Doing everything right in marketing

You’re Doing Everything Right. So Why Aren’t You Growing?

If you’ve ever tried sailing, you must have learned something very fast: you don’t need the wind to be behind you to move forward.

In fact, you can sail almost into the wind — at an angle of about 40 degrees — and still reach your destination. Not directly, not in a straight line, but effective enough to get where you want to go.

Strange, right?

Now here’s the even stranger part.

Sometimes the wind is perfectly behind you.
Everything should work properly.
And yet… you barely move.

Why?

Because your sails are wrong.

Same wind.
Same boat.
Completely different outcome.

Most companies assume growth works like a tailwind.

“If the market is good… if we invest more… if we push harder… we’ll move forward faster.”

But business doesn’t work like that.

You can grow even in difficult conditions. If you’re aligned.

And you can stagnate in perfect conditions. If you’re not.

So, a lot of B2B technical companies have solid products, competent teams, real clients, years of experience, ongoing marketing efforts and a functioning sales process.

And yet… growth is slow, inconsistent, or simply below what it should be.

Not because the company lacks value.

But because something more subtle is missing.

The uncomfortable truth: “doing things right” is not enough

Most companies assume growth is a function of effort: more marketing, more sales activity, more campaigns. More tools.

So they push harder.

But here’s the problem: effort doesn’t create growth. Alignment does.

Example #1: The company that sells everything (and nothing)

A mid-sized IT services company.

15+ years in the market, strong technical team, good reputation, a reasonable list of clients.

On paper, everything looks solid.

But when you ask: “What do you actually sell?”

You get a list: infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud, support, consulting, custom projects.

Everything is there. Except clarity.

For the client, this translates into:

“I’m not sure what these guys are really best at.”

So what happens?

  • sales cycles get longer
  • deals go to more specialized competitors
  • price becomes the main decision factor.

The company reacts predictably:

“We need more marketing.”

But more marketing doesn’t fix confusion. It amplifies it.

Example #2: The company that looks like everyone else

A B2B services firm: good delivery, happy clients, strong internal team.

They invest in marketing: website redesign, content, campaigns.

Everything is “by the book.”

And yet, in sales conversations, the same pattern appears:

“We’re also talking to 2–3 other companies like yours.”

Because from the outside, they are like the others: same language, same claims, same positioning.

So what decides the deal?

Price.
Or personal preference.

Again, internally, the conclusion is: “We need more leads.”

But the real issue is different: if you’re not clearly differentiated, more leads don’t improve growth.

They just increase the number of negotiations you lose.

Example #3: The company stuck in execution

This one is even more common.

The founder is constantly busy: operations, hiring, delivery, cash flow, administrative pressure.

Marketing exists—but fragmented: a campaign here, a website update there, some content when there’s time.

Nothing is truly wrong.

But nothing compounds.

Because there is no clear structure behind it.

This creates a dangerous perception:

“Marketing doesn’t really work for us.”

In reality, the problem is not marketing itself.

It’s the lack of consistency, clarity, and direction behind it — something many entrepreneurs experience when time and resources are limited.

The pattern behind all of this

Different companies. Different contexts. Same underlying issue.

Not lack of effort.
Not lack of capability.

But lack of alignment.

  • between what the company offers and what the market actually values
  • between how the company sees itself and how the market perceives it
  • between marketing, sales, and the real buying process

Why is this problem so hard to see

Because from the inside, everything feels… reasonable.

You have a logical portfolio, a decent website, active sales and ongoing marketing.

Nothing is obviously broken.

Which makes the real issue almost invisible.

And that’s what makes it expensive.

The illusion of progress

When growth slows, most companies don’t question the foundation.

They optimize execution: new campaigns, new tools, new agencies, more content.

It feels productive. It looks like progress.

But often, it’s just motion without direction.

Or worse:

You are scaling a system that is fundamentally misaligned.

The real cost (that nobody measures)

This is where things get serious: lack of alignment doesn’t just slow growth.

It creates hidden losses:

  • opportunities that refuse to convert
  • deals lost to clearer competitors
  • constant pressure to discount
  • longer sales cycles
  • internal confusion between teams.

None of these appear clearly in a report.

But together, they shape the trajectory of the business.

And over time, the gap between potential and reality becomes significant.

A different way to look at growth

Most companies think in terms of:

marketing → leads → sales → growth

But this skips a critical layer.

Before marketing works, something else needs to be true:

The company must make sense to the market.

  • what it sells must be clear
  • who it is for must be obvious
  • why it is different must be easy to understand.

Without this, everything downstream becomes harder.

With it, everything becomes easier.

What actually changes when alignment exists

When a company is aligned with its market, marketing becomes more efficient, sales conversations become simpler, differentiation becomes natural. Therefore, pricing becomes easier to defend and growth becomes more predictable.

Not because the company suddenly works harder.

But because it finally works in the right direction.
